Google Tech Talk: Proven Techniques for Increasing Your Engineering Impact
By far, one of my favorite parts about working at Google was the opportunity to attend tech talks by industry veterans. People like Joshua Bloch (the lead architect behind the Java collections API used by millions of software developers) and Guido van Rossum (the inventor of Python) would share their many years of insight and expertise with other Googlers on how to design and build great software. These talks taught me many lessons on how to effectively scale engineering teams, and those lessons have shaped how I think about building great products and teams at the companies I’ve worked at.
And so, when I was recently invited by the Authors@Google program to return to the Google campus to share some of the stories and lessons that I’ve picked up over the years, I was more than thrilled to have an opportunity to give back to that community. Google graciously recorded the talk, so I’m excited to share the video with you as well.
In this talk, you’ll learn a framework that effective engineers use to assess how and where to spend their time and that took me years of working 70-80 hour weeks to figure out. And you’ll get inside access into stories and lessons from engineering leaders at places like Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, Square, and more. What separates the most effective engineers they’ve worked with from everyone else? What’s the most valuable lesson they’ve learned in the past year? What investment has paid off the highest returns for them?
Watch the talk to find out, and share which lessons resonate the most with you in the comments.
